About the Book

"Surprised by mud" is the best way to describe the memorable night when God revealed to me that the wobbly, out-of-control pot spinning on the potter's wheel was a metaphor for my own life. Since that moment, I have never been the same, as a potter or as a Christian, and I continue to be surprised by the rich spiritual lessons He shares when I have muddy hands.

Let the words of this wobbly pot encourage you—the Master Potter has a marvelous design for you that you cannot possibly imagine! His intent is to make you holy, not just happy. He knows everything about you, deeply loves you, and knows every lump, crack, and shattering event that this fallen world has inflicted on you. He passionately desires to remake the brokenness of your heart into a new vessel that will hold all the treasures of His Holy Spirit.

What They are Saying

About Master Potter, Simple Clay Ministry

"I’ve been a pastor's wife almost 30 years, so I've been to a lot of retreats and a lot of seminars. This one, Master Potter Simple Clay, is unique in that watching what she was doing -- throwing a pot live and talking at the same time kind of amazed me. It was very magical and also very meditative. There's a lot of fantastic Bible study in her presentation, the deeper life sort, contemplating the scriptures that she presents and relating these principles of how potters do their work to how God works with us.

"It is also just great fun. Jennifer has a good sense of humor and tells funny stories, mixing all parts of her personality into what she presents; the science teacher part, her family and her quirky pets, then also talking about how pottery influenced and developed her walk with the Lord. We did a lot of laughing through the day, and some crying too.

"Her story of the hard lump left in the bottom of the muck bucket is one that I’ll be thinking about for quite a while. Jennifer's challenge out of that story to us was -- what is that hard lump in your life that you have not yielded to the Lord fully and how is it keeping you from fully experiencing His love, grace fullness in your life?-Kathryn Johnson, Everett, WA.

"I think Jennifer is very gifted in what she is doing. She is following the footsteps that God has placed in front of her and as she walks that path, there's no doubt that she's asking the Holy Spirit to lead and guide her. She has a tremendous gift of storytelling, of taking everyday situations and pulling them into what she's trying to share through her heart, her pottery experience, and drawing the audience in because we relate to it. It comes out in her whole presentation and the love that she has for the Lord is very, very evident.

"It's beautiful to watch. Absolutely. The Holy Spirit is going to speak to your heart in one way or another, and you will come out a better person for having attended. He speaks to all of us differently. What one person will get out of the presentation may not be the same as the other, but everyone will come out with a gift from the Lord from being there. Please go. It's a divine appointment.-Susan Shirkey, Sequim,WA.

" I think that Jennifer is some kind of perfect storm of really funny and really knowledgeable. She’s an artist who knows the science, tells it in a witty way and has this unique ability to bring in personal stories so that it really hits you in the heart, taking your mind along and bringing it all together, pulling all these threads at just the right time.

" You don't often see an artist working in the church, artists are kind of hidden, and you definitely don't see scientists. At church we hear preaching and teaching, prayer and worship as gifts, but there isn't always a place for art. There are so many people that have creative abilities that are sitting in church thinking 'that's just that thing I do outside of church and it doesn't have anything to do with my faith.' But to have it brought together – um -- that was really huge for me to see that it could be both, and not only is it both, but that's how the Bible presents it; God as an artist and scientist and the scriptures that relay these really deep truths that you wouldn't be able to communicate otherwise. Just to see that art is valued in God's kingdom, then for her to bring in the science just made it even richer. I think that was really huge for me. I think it was life changing.
